This debut novel by an Arab-American voice, takes us inside the lives of conservative Arab women living in America. In Brooklyn, eighteen-year-old Deya is starting to meet with suitors. Though she doesn’t want to get married, her grandparents give her no choice. History is repeating itself: Deya’s mother, Isra, also had no choice when she left Palestine as a teenager to marry Adam. Though Deya was raised to believe her parents died in a car accident, a secret note from a mysterious, yet familiar-looking woman makes Deya question everything she was told about her past. As the narrative alternates between the lives of Deya and Isra, she begins to understand the dark, complex secrets behind her community.
Discussion led by Stacy Hankin.

Have you ever wanted to explore stories in Torah and use the writing process to personally understand the significance of Torah stories in your life? Join a small group of Havurahniks to delve into Torah using the writing process to explore and record our journey. Each evening will include a summary of that week's Torah portion and pearls from commentary. We will then begin two free-writes from prompts from the portion.
All that is required is a journal. There is an optional opportunity to choose one portion to study, summarize and use to create writing prompts.
Facilitated by Harriet Cooke and Jenni Besen. Harriet trained and led groups with Portland's Write Around Portland, then led an eight-year writing group on Torah. 10-person maximum.

Because Christmas Day can be a little challenging for Jews, we’ve developed our own ways of coping with feeling “other” on this quiet day, with Chinese food being only one example. Another way is to fully embrace our “otherness" with song and prayer! Join J.D. Kleinke and friends for a old school Kabbalat service full of “comfort” music: traditional, classic, and just plain old familiar songs that many of us grew up with. Because for us Jews, every friday night is a Holy Night! This service will take place in Zoom Room Aleph. Please email info@havurahshalom.org if you need Zoom join info.
