Bikkur Holim
Bikkur Holim (Visiting the Sick)
Havurah members, for the names and contact info of cluster leads, committee chairs, and some other Havurahniks in leadership roles, visit Havurah's Leadership Directory (log in to your Havurah Shalom member account for access).
The Bikkur Holim Committee helps the rabbi support congregants needing spiritual, communal, and pastoral support in times of illness, suffering, and death. The committee also cultivates within Havurah Shalom a regular practice of and process for the mitzvah of bikkur holim, visiting the sick, and the mitzvah of nichum aveylim, comforting the mourner.
The committee's current activities include the following:
- Visiting and/or making calls and/or sending cards to ill congregants in hospital, rehab, or recovering at home, as referred by the rabbi or other Havurah Shalom staff.
- Making regular calls of encouragement and support to congregants experiencing difficulties, as referred by the rabbi or other Havurah Shalom staff.
- Making calls and/or sending cards of condolence and support to congregants in mourning at regular milestones during the first year after a death.
- Coordinating and/or leading periodic healing services (including virtual services).
- In collaboration with the Ma’avar (End of Life) Committee, facilitating periodic online drop-in grief support groups.
If you need support, would like to learn more about the Bikkur Holim Committee, or would like to join this committee, please contact co-chairs Fran Berg or Tivona Reith.
If you are a member of Havurah, you are invited to use this form to request that the name of a relative or Havurah member be said during the Misheberach (healing prayer) at Shabbat services. You will need to log in as a member to access the form.
