Refugee and Immigrant Fund

“Welcome the Stranger” is the Torah’s call to action.

Thank you for your generous gift to the Refugee and Immigrant Fund. In 2016, Havurah became a Sanctuary Congregation. We continue to deepen our understanding of sanctuary as a response, as a strategy, as a vision, and as a moral imperative. For Havurah, this has meant building relationships, showing up, bearing witness, accompanying when asked, raising our voices, and since 2020 directly supporting families who, like many of our ancestors, are working to rebuild their lives here in the United States.

We are currently sponsoring two families:
  • Maria and Carlos, a mother and son from Guatemala who fled their home to seek asylum
  • Zakrullah, Horia and baby Zoya, a refugee family from Afghanistan
Your generous gifts help these families with living expenses and other needs as they arise.

If you wish to be more involved in our sanctuary work please contact one of our Sanctuary Committee Co-Chairs: Robert Trachtenberg, Kathy Gordon or Shari Raider.
