Becoming a Member
We are delighted that you are considering Havurah Shalom as your community. Over 500 households in the Portland metro area have made Havurah their spiritual home.
Havurah does not have any specific criteria for membership. We allow anyone to join. We only ask that you have an honest interest in being part of our Jewish community. To discuss membership, please don't hesitate to email tara@havurahshalom.org. We would be happy to talk with you and answer any questions you may have!
If you decide that you want to be a member, please fill out the New Member Form and the Dues Commitment Form. Havurah offers great flexibility with regard to dues; we don't ever want finances to be an obstacle to membership, so we allow members to self-adjust dues.
Step 1: Complete the New Member Form
Step 2: Complete the Dues Commitment Form
Both the new member form and the dues commitment form must be filled out to process you as a member. If you have questions about the new member form, contact tara@havurahshalom.org. If you have questions about dues or the dues commitment form, contact Karen Westerman, our dues volunteer. A long-time Havurah member and past president, Karen would be happy to discuss this topic with you.
You will find a wealth of information about Havurah’s activities and programs on our website and calendar. If you are not sure about membership, but would like to receive our monthly email updates to get a sense of the community, you can email tara@havurahshalom.org and we will add you to our non-member email list. You can also check out our previous weekly emails and our monthly newsletters here. We look forward to meeting you!

Are you interested in learning how to chant the Torah? This beautiful, ancient system is a treat to learn, and inspiring to sing. A five-session class led by Ken Lerner will teach you everything you need in order to connect with this heritage, and become a proud “leyner” (Torah chanter). Ken has been a patient teacher of beginning Torah readers for over 30 years at Havurah, and would be happy to help you feel the satisfaction of gaining this skill. There is a minimum of three interested students to make the class a reality, and there is a limit of seven people. Please RSVP soon if you are interested, but no later than Jan. 15, 2025, and Ken will be in touch about the class. -

Monthly music jams are back! Tune your instrument, warm up your voice and head down to Havurah to jam with us. Join your fellow Havurah musicians for an evening of playing and singing together—for the joy of it! Jams are led by fellow Havurah members and are completely democratic--everyone chooses songs! Our songbook includes both Jewish and secular songs from a wide range of artists and eras. Please RSVP. -

The Havurah Ma’avar Committee is offering a six-week grief process-support group for Havurah members in any stage of grief. Chaplain Candi Wuhrman will facilitate the group with a focus on the dying experience, the impact of the relationship, the things unsaid, making peace within ourselves, forgiveness, and continuing the relationship after death. (This group will be limited to eight participants. If we reach capacity, that will be indicated here on the RSVP page.)
