Rosh Chodesh Tov! Gender-inclusive New Moon Ritual
This monthly new-moon ritual will explore the history of each segment of the Hebrew lunar year from the perspective of Earth-based moon cycles.
This group is open to all genders and non-genders, inviting us each to connect with our closest heavenly body and timekeeper—the Moon—in a both ancient and contemporary celebration. All Havurahniks are welcome to come learn together and celebrate the wonders of nature and our ancient practices each month.
Facilitated by Andrine de la Rocha & Howard Patterson.
An introductory meeting will happen on the full moon of Elul 5783 on Wednesday, August 30 at 7 pm outdoors—weather permitting—in North Portland. Subsequent meetings will be on/near the new moon of each month in North Portland, with plans to meet on Zoom or in person for each gathering, depending on seasonal shifts in the weather. Subsequent gatherings are set to take place approximately monthly, starting in mid-October, with all meetups taking place at 7 pm. Details on the Rosh Chodesh gatherings and how to sign up for them will be shared in other communications.
If you have questions, email Andrine de la Rocha and Howard Patterson.

We are excited to bring mahjong back to Havurah. It is a fun, social activity that builds community, encouraging new friendships and cementing old ones. And while some of us may play elsewhere as well, we all agreed that restoring its place as an ongoing congregational activity will be a good fit for Havurah and those of us who play or want to learn the game. So please don't hesitate to join us! -

Jewish text study is similar to tuning a radio. Each type of text—TaNaKH (Bible), Rabbinic Literature (Midrash and Talmud), Medieval Commentary (Rashi, ibn Ezra, Nachmanides) and Mystical (Kabbalistic and Hasidic)—operates on a different frequency. Each seeks to clarify what we are hearing about the world, following a set of rules. Each reads the world’s signals. We will spend two weeks tuning into specific passages from the four genres. Hebrew is not necessary for this overview , although we will read some of the “greatest hits” together in the original. Transistor radios preferred to digital, because we are all subject to static. Led by Rabbi Joey Wolf. -
