This workshop for parents will focus on the rite of passage itself, then on the date-selection process. Led by Rabbi Benjamin and the B’nei Mitzvah Committee.

Aging in Portland will be a 2.5-hour interactive presentation with a focus on practical resources, continuum of care and housing options for seniors in the greater Portland area. This event will feature two presenters, Lyn Trainer, co-chair of RiverWest Villages, and Dan Torrence, Eldercare specialist/assisted living administrator and dementia care consultant.

Join us at the Havurah Annex as we do a preliminary painting of our new Teen Room, and brainstorm ways to make it a welcoming and cozy space. Wear appropriate clothing. Oh, and there will be pizza and drinks too!

Do you get emails asking you to contact your elected official, but don’t find the few minutes it takes to call or email them? Looking to connect with other Havurahniks? We have the solution. Together, by Zoom or at Havurah, we’ll eat lunch, chat, and spend a few minutes taking our political action. From climate change to social justice, we’ll have info on who to call or write. Bring your suggestions too.

A course for transforming our antiracism efforts through Jewish spiritual practice. Facilitated by Rabbi Benjamin and María Lisa Johnson Learn concrete Jewish spiritual tools alongside other Havurah members to confront, subvert, and heal implicit and internalized racism within ourselves and others. This course explores the inner work necessary to change our habits of mind, body, and spirit to dismantle racism, in support of whatever organizing, advocacy, and service-work we’re each engaged in. Our core spiritual practice will be Mussar, the Jewish spiritual discipline designed to integrate what the head understands with what the heart feels through daily practice. Participants will be expected to attend every session (as much as possible) and commit to consistent practice in between sessions, including meeting with a learning partner once every other week. This is not an antiracism 101 course, but rather is intended to build on an existing antiracism foundation, so participants need to have an understanding of systemic racism in the United States. Beginning with an overview of the concept, Rabbi Ruttenberg then examines it through various lenses, from the interpersonal to the national. Chapters will be read on our own between sessions, and we’ll explore them together each class. Please RSVP by February 22.

Members Natalie Lerner and KellyAnn Cameron have been hosting asylum-seekers in need of temporary housing in their spare bedroom for the last two years—a need that has recently increased with the arrival of hundreds of asylum-seekers to Portland. They will share about their experience, the escalating need, and opportunities for Havurah members to get involved. You can learn more by emailing Natalie.

The Conversation Project focuses on learning and considering the types of healthcare decisions that may need to be made in a medical crisis and/or at the end-of-life, and most importantly having conversations with your loved ones and your healthcare provider about your preferences. Our first meeting will focus on types of health decisions and preparing to have a conversation with your loved ones. The second meeting will focus on writing your own Advance Directive.

How do people know how to chant the Torah? This beautiful, ancient system is a treat to learn and inspiring to sing. A six-session class led by Ken Lerner will teach you everything you need to connect with this heritage and become a proud leyner (Torah chanter). Maybe you have a child (or niece or nephew) who will be a bar, bat, or b’nei mitzvah in the next few years. This would be a chance to be one of the Torah readers at that special life cycle event. Or maybe you have always wondered what it would take for you yourself to chant Torah. Maybe it is a logical next step on your path of embracing Jewish practices. Ken has been a patient teacher of beginning Torah readers for over 30 years at Havurah and would be happy for you too to feel the satisfaction of gaining this skill. Class is limited to eight people.
