Benjamin Barnett
Rabbi Benjamin Barnett
Benjamin Barnett will become rabbi of Havurah Shalom in August 2017.
He has served as the rabbi of Beit Am, a pluralistic Jewish Community in Corvallis, Oregon, since August 2006. Originally from the Chicago area, he received his B.A. in English from the University of Michigan, and his rabbinic ordination from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia.
In leading a diverse congregation, he has drawn from years of living and learning in Jewish communities across the religious spectrum. Prior to entering rabbinical school, he worked with mentally ill adults, led wilderness expeditions for teenagers, and lived, worked and studied in Israel.
He is a devoted practitioner and teacher of Jewish contemplative prayer and meditation, practices through which he strives to cultivate wisdom and compassion, and to respond maturely to the challenges of life and community. He works to build relationships across religious and cultural lines in the name of creating a less violent world.
He and his wife Rachel will move to Portland from Corvallis this summer with their children: Lev, Arava, and Judah.

We are currently working on two big projects - putting together care packages for families impacted by current deportation actions, and working in conjunction with two other communities of faith to support a family clinic on 10/18. For information on either of these, please email tikkunolam@havurahshalom.org. -

Join us for a family-friendly and joyous celebration featuring music and dancing with the Torah! Simchat Torah means "Rejoicing in the Torah." On Simchat Torah, we celebrate the conclusion of our annual Torah reading cycle and the beginning of another. We read the last Torah portion, then the first chapter of Genesis, remembering that the Torah is a circle of life that never ends. Torah brings sweetness to the lives of all of us! -

We enjoyed raising, decorating, celebrating and singing in the sukkah, but now it's time to take it down, down, down to the basement until next year. Come bring your drills, your excitement for working with lumber, and your good teamwork. Sign up over on the High Holidays Volunteer Sign-Up, the final volunteer spot of the season. Thank you!
