Elul and High Holidays Reflections

Call for Visual Art

As part of our annual holiday cycle, Havurah members are invited to share our own reflections on the themes and stories of the High Holiday season. What are you thinking and feeling as we enter our most holy season of introspection?

In addition to prose or poetry that may be shared on the bima at services, we are putting out a call for artistic expressions in any visual medium, including paintings, drawings and photography.

Your work will be shown in the social hall at Havurah Shalom from the month of Elul (starting Sept. 3) to the end of Simchat Torah (Oct. 25). We are asking for a brief (400 word max) artist’s statement that "frames" your work within the theme of Elul and the High Holidays and optionally an artist’s bio (also 400 word max). Please include a title for the work and information about the media used. This information will be shared on a card (we will produce) near the work when it is hung. Multiple works are welcome. Artwork should be 30" wide at most to fit in the available spaces.

Artists may drop off their submissions on Monday, Aug. 26, between 11 am and 4 pm, or by appointment.

In past years, we have encouraged Havurahniks to use the congregational theme as a lens for reflections or “mini-drashot.” This year, however, Havurah Shalom will not have a theme; there were so many suggestions that selecting a single one felt restrictive. Rather, we welcome your reflections on any aspect of the High Holidays experience, whether they arise from our tradition’s core concepts of teshuvah (return) or seliḥah (forgiveness), or from any other aspect of your own process of looking inward during the time leading into the holiday season.

To learn more about having your art shown in our Elul and High Holiday Gallery, please reach out to Rachel Pollak (rachel@havurahshalom.org) by August 26, 2024. If you will be sharing prose on the bima, please email it to her by that date as well.

The Elul and High Holiday Gallery is a project of the High Holidays Committee and the Design Committee, led by Joan Peck and Marcia Suttenberg.

In order to build community within Havurah, this call for art goes out to members only. We welcome others to visit our space and enjoy the talent and thoughtfulness on display.
