Israel has been engaged in a military occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip for 56 years, since the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. What are the declared purposes of the Occupation? Does it mean the liberation of the historic Israelite territories of Judea and Samaria and a herald of the messianic age? What is the impact of the occupation on the Palestinian people over whom it rules? What are the legal and political mechanisms sustaining it? Is this a temporary situation, as the legal implication of the term occupation suggests? Or is it a semi-permanent structure contributing to the de facto one-state reality in Israel/Palestine?
This is an 8-week, mainly film-based class. People will watch the films at home and come together in person each week for a contextual lecture and discussion of the films.
Taught by Joel Beinin.
