Summary: Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant, making it very difficult for Black Americans to register to vote. In 1965, the city of Selma, Alabama became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery. Their efforts culminated with President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

While the movie is rated PG-13, and young people are welcome, parents should consider watching the movie first to decide whether the realistically depicted violence would be too disturbing for your children at this time.
