Becca, an investigative journalist and Havurah member, is working on a book for Penguin Books that investigates how 20th century federal land policies gave her Jewish ancestors a free homestead and pathway to the middle class at great cost to their Lakota neighbors. As part of this project, Becca and Rabbi Benjamin have been studying Jewish teachings for how individuals and communities can respond to systemic and historic harms. As an extension of that conversation, this class examines and grapples with collective accountability and repair. We will explore both primary Jewish sources and contemporary analysis, analyze examples of collective apology, and learn about Indigenous-led efforts for how to move forward. Using research tools provided by Becca, participants will also have an opportunity to investigate how they personally have benefited from theft of Indigenous land. Led by Becca Clarren and Rabbi Benjamin.
