Havurah Shalom New Member Form 2023-24

Dear Prospective Member,

We are delighted that you are considering becoming a member of Havurah Shalom! We are an energetic community affiliated with Reconstructing Judaism (reconstructingjudaism.org). Our mission is to provide a vibrant, diverse, participatory Jewish community steeped in Jewish values, promoting spirituality, learning and acts of social responsibility. Havurah is an inclusive community, open to everyone who wishes to connect with Judaism.

Havurah values our members and their active participation. We rely on members to take leadership roles in all areas of our community: leading and reading Torah at Shabbat and High Holiday services, governing, educating, providing music, and taking social action. Our Reconstructionist emphasis on active involvement distinguishes Havurah from most other congregations. It allows members to become truly engaged in Jewish community while enriching individual experience, deepening family relationships and friendships, and creating a strong, intertwined community. This participatory model calls for ongoing renewals of commitment and involvement. We work with members to find opportunities for active participation that correspond with their interests, skills, and availability.

No matter your background or experience with Judaism, there is a place for you at Havurah Shalom! Attend or lead services. Participate in a social action event. Make music. Learn Hebrew. Study Torah. Make new friends. Celebrate your Jewish life. We look forward to welcoming you as a participatory member in the coming year and in the years to come.

Our website, www.havurahshalom.org, contains a wealth of information about Havurah’s activities and programs. We hope you will explore the site to learn more about us. If you have any questions, please call our office at 503-248-4662 or email tara@havurahshalom.org. We look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,
Oren Kosansky and David Kertzner, Co-Presidents

2023-2024 Membership & Dues Information

At Havurah Shalom, member dues constitute nearly 80% of our annual income and are essential to our financial well-being. Dues pay for programming, building and occupancy expenses, personnel costs, and other expenses necessary to support our growing and vibrant community. We budget carefully, avoid extravagance, and enlist the support of volunteers as much as possible in order to keep costs down. The chart below shows standard monthly dues for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

Standard monthly dues for the fiscal year July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024 are as follows:

Chart showing dues for 2022-23. For assistance, please call 503-248-4662, ext. 2.
Age brackets are based on the oldest member of the household joining. The Associate membership is meant for folks who live 60+ miles away and will only attend Havurah events a few times per year. Double Chai and Triple Chai are a voluntary higher dues bracket.

We recognize that for many households, the cost of congregational membership is a key consideration in choosing when and where to affiliate. Not every member can afford the standard dues and we don’t want membership dues to be a barrier to cultivating a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable Jewish community. To welcome members of all income levels, our dues structure includes a self-adjustment option.

Dues Adjustment Option. You may self-adjust your membership dues according to your ability to pay, with a suggested annual minimum amount of 2% of your Adjusted Gross Income (line 11 of form 1040), but at least $360 per year for those who are 24 or older. You do not need to ask permission to self-adjust, nor will you be asked for proof that you are entitled to a Dues adjustment. All self-adjustments are kept strictly confidential. We trust that when you are able, you will increase your level of support for the community.

“May you be blessed in everything you do and by virtue of the way you extend your hand.” - Deuteronomy 15:10

The final step in your membership application is to complete this dues form. (The link will also appear on the page that follows this one after you submit this form.) If you have questions about your dues, one of our Finance Committee Co-Leads, Karen Westerman, would be happy to discuss your options. She can be reached at karen.westerman@havurahshalom.org.

We look forward to having you as a member of our community!
