Havurah Shalom New Member Form 2022-23

Dear Prospective Member,

We are delighted that you are considering becoming a member of Havurah Shalom! We are an energetic community affiliated with Reconstructing Judaism (reconstructingjudaism.org). Our mission is to provide a vibrant, diverse, participatory Jewish community steeped in Jewish values, promoting spirituality, learning and acts of social responsibility. Havurah is an inclusive community, open to everyone who wishes to connect with Judaism.

Havurah values our members and their active participation. We rely on members to take leadership roles in several areas of our community: leading and reading Torah at Shabbat and High Holiday services, governing, educating, providing music, and taking social action. Our Reconstructionist emphasis on active involvement distinguishes Havurah from most other congregations. It allows members to become truly engaged in Jewish community while enriching individual experience, deepening family relationships and friendships, and creating a strong, intertwined community. This participatory model calls for ongoing renewals of commitment and involvement. While we desire and need member participation to achieve our goal of being a vibrant community, we realize that participation can look different for each member and that it varies depending on what else is happening in your life.

No matter your background or experience with Judaism, there is a place for you at Havurah Shalom! Attend or lead services. Participate in a social action event. Make music. Learn Hebrew. Study Torah. Make new friends. Celebrate your Jewish life. We hope that you will be an active participant both in the coming year and in the years to come.

Our website, www.havurahshalom.org, contains a wealth of information about Havurah’s activities and programs. We hope you will explore the site to learn more about us. If you have any questions, please call our office at 503-248-4662 or email info@havurahshalom.org. We look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,
Loree Devery and Oren Kosansky, co-Presidents

2022-2023 Membership & Dues Information

Inclusive of our many shared responsibilities are the tasks of funding our programs, our building, and other community endeavors. We avoid extravagance, budget carefully, and volunteer to keep costs down. Unlike many congregations, we fund most of these costs with collected dues because we don't require that new members pay into a building fund. Additionally, we don't use member and staff energy on constant fundraising and have just begun to build an endowment to offset larger overhead costs.

Standard monthly dues for the fiscal year July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023 are as follows:

Chart showing dues for 2022-23. For assistance, please call 503-248-4662, ext. 2.
Age brackets are based on the oldest member of the household joining. The Associate membership is meant for folks who live 60+ miles away and will only attend Havurah events a few times per year. Double Chai and Triple Chai are a voluntary higher dues bracket. As far as timing goes, dues can be paid as above, or we can make accommodations if necessary.

We know that not every member can afford the dues noted on the table above. We recognize that for many households, the cost of congregational membership is a key consideration in choosing when and where to affiliate. We never want our dues structure to be a barrier to cultivating a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable Jewish community. If you wish to join Havurah Shalom, we do not want the cost to stand in your way. To welcome members of all income levels, our dues structure includes a self-adjustment option:

If the dues for your household are more than you can afford, please self-adjust to 2% of your Adjusted Gross Income, with an annual minimum amount of $30 per month for the dues category for 24-27 years old and older. This is an honor system, so you do not need to ask permission to self-adjust, nor will you be asked for proof that you are entitled to the self-adjustment. All self-adjustments are kept strictly confidential.

“May you be blessed in everything you do and by virtue of the way you extend your hand.”  - Deuteronomy 15:10

The final step in your membership application is to complete this dues form. (The link will appear on the page that follows this one after you submit this form.) If you have questions about your dues, one of our past-presidents, Karen Westerman, would be happy to discuss your options. She can be reached at karen.westerman@havurahshalom.org.

We look forward to having you as a member of our community!
