The Israel/Palestine Committee will host discussions about films that help illuminate the I/P situation. Today we will be discussing "The Gatekeepers". Please watch the film prior to the discussion. The 2012 Oscar-nominated documentary tells the story of Shin Bet, the Israeli internal security service, from the perspective of six former Directors who recount Shin Bet’s role from the 1967 Arab-Israeli War until their retirement. Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice. Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice. Discussion led by Leatrice Kaplan. This course is for beginners, even those who have begun before. Focusing on basic reading competency, we will uncover bits of Judaism that are only accessible through its original language. Our text has online home practice. Taught by Deborah Eisenbach-Budner. This class takes place in Zoom Room Bet.

In this cohort, we will explore Jewish spiritual wisdom to guide our pursuit of justice and support our building a more loving world. In trusted community, and utilizing a range of texts and practices, we will focus on particular middot, “soul traits,” and their impact on our relationships and action. Guidance will also be given for practice and reflection in between sessions. This class is now full.

Did you take Hebrew lessons ages ago or did you participate in an Ulpan experience in Israel but have forgotten all you learned? Would you like to laugh and learn with fellow Havurahniks? Come join Racheli Ross as she continues a beginning Hebrew class in which the focus is on functional Hebrew conversations and vocabulary development.
