The Tikkun Olam Cluster and Sanctuary Committee invite you to learn more about how we as individuals and as a community can help new Afghan arrivals to Oregon and advocate for protection and security for vulnerable populations still in Afghanistan. The meeting will be recorded for those that can't attend and we will be providing a summary with ways to help afterwards. This event will take place in Zoom Room Bet.

Following a successful peer-led Young People’s Discussion Program during Shavuot, our community will be facilitating two more 90-minute sessions for teens and the college crowd: one during Elul (Aug. 2021) and one during the High Holidays (Sept. 6-16). Focus: While many concerns remain present as we move into a new phase of the pandemic, there is also much-awaited excitement about the reopening of institutions like school and community activities. At the same time, young people who are paying attention are aware of many new challenges from the rise of bigotry and anti-Semitism to the critical need for inclusion and the fight for LGBTQ opportunities, access and basic dignity. As our year ends and we begin 5782, in what ways are you re-opening, personally and with your community? Why is it hard to re-open sometimes? How different are you now compared to before the pandemic? Do you feel hopeful and why or why not? This discussion group will take place on Havurah’s High Holidays website. The topics include: ▪ Why organize? – Examine the history, traditions, and values of our labor, faith, community, and educational organizations. ▪ Fundamental organizing skills – Learn tools to conduct individual relational meetings, listening sessions, research, negotiations, and action to help obtain a concrete, winnable outcome. ▪ Strengthening our institutions – Engage people systematically in a culture that is relational, action-oriented, and reflective. ▪ Problems vs. issues – Focus from general problems to concrete, winnable issues by using relational power in the public arena to negotiate for the common good.
