We invite you to embark with us on gaining a better understanding of how anti-racism and belonging shows up within the congregation through this small group conversation. All conversation groups are structured by self-selected shared identity. This conversation is for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) members. Celebrate Earth Day with a leisurely outing at Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area, in Portland, to enjoy the woods, meadows, spring flowers and looking for woodland and water birds and other creatures. Join us for this family friendly adventure on Sunday, April 24 from 10-noon. We will walk about 1 mile in, but you are welcome to finish your walk sooner. Binoculars and spotting scopes are welcome. We will read three novels that ponder the human response to severe trauma—William Styron's Sophie’s Choice, Toni Morrison's Beloved and Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things—and explore whether and how these novels illuminate how people process, integrate and adapt to traumatic events.

A thorough decoding of Exodus 13:17-17:16, Song of the Sea. We continue to build vocabulary and delve into what it means to escape oppression, rejoice, receive privilege at the expense of others, and keep moving. We will refer to ancient and modern midrashim (interpretation) that stem from the nuances of the Hebrew text. Basic Hebrew decoding ability needed (even slowly). Led by Deborah Eisenbach-Budner. Taught by Racheli Ross Let's have a party in Hebrew! We will spend 5 classes learning and practicing our conversational Hebrew while planning a party. And for the last class, we will hold a party and celebrate together. Hebrew level required: Basic reading and writing (can read and write single words and short sentences), and a vocabulary of about 50 words or more (If you're unsure, try to list the words you know including colors, simple phrases, food, animals, and some verbs). Class will meet in person at Havurah Shalom.
