We are a group of Havurah members interested in climate social justice. We will be reading "Braiding Sweetgrass" to connect to indigenous wisdom about life and social action around the environment. We are reaching out to see if new people want to join our lively and joyful book discussions. Open to non-members as well as members. We will meet every other Monday through July 4.

We will read three novels that ponder the human response to severe trauma—William Styron's Sophie’s Choice, Toni Morrison's Beloved and Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things—and explore whether and how these novels illuminate how people process, integrate and adapt to traumatic events.

The Genizah has been an integral part of Jewish ritual life in communities across time and space. Come spend an hour learning about the tradition of treating sacred texts as living beings deserving of honor and respect at the end of their useful lives. In preparation for the first opening of our genizah on May 22, this class will give us an opportunity to think deeply and expansively about life, death, and Torah. Led by Oren Kosansky. A thorough decoding of Exodus 13:17-17:16, Song of the Sea. We continue to build vocabulary and delve into what it means to escape oppression, rejoice, receive privilege at the expense of others, and keep moving. We will refer to ancient and modern midrashim (interpretation) that stem from the nuances of the Hebrew text. Basic Hebrew decoding ability needed (even slowly). Led by Deborah Eisenbach-Budner. "The Worst Thing" (Germany title is "To Germany, with Love") In 1985, Kathleen lost her brother Eddie, an American soldier, at the hands of the Red Army Faction (RAF), a German leftist terrorist organization. “The Worst Thing” (German title: “To Germany, With Love”) follows Kathleen as she travels to Germany to make peace with aging former members of the RAF. This film is story of a restorative justice journey and about transformation, repair, relationship building and healing.

An in-depth look at the weekly Torah reading, led by congregants. No prior knowledge or study is necessary. At Havurah Shalom and in Zoom Room Bet.
