An Intimate Afternoon with David Fuks: Short Stories and a One-Act Play from a Child of Holocaust Survivors

The postponed short story reading by Havurah member and author/playwright David Fuks has been rescheduled for July 16. The program will now also feature the premier reading of David’s play “For Love.” Co-sponsored by Havurah, Next Generations Group, and the Oregon Jewish Museum and Holocaust Resource Center.

Take Action Lunch Bunch to Save the Chinook Salmon

At this lunch-hour meetup, we’ll focus on the urgent need to start breaching the lower four Snake River dams to save the Chinook salmon, who are on the verge of extinction. Chinook salmon are a foundational species in the Pacific Northwest for forest health, Native American communities, and wildlife, including eagles, bears, orcas. We will urge the U.S. president and Oregon senators to take action to make a difference. Contact

Winner of the 2017 PEN/Faulkner award for fiction, this debut novel tells the story of Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem. Jende has come to the United States to provide a better life for himself, his wife, Neni, and their six-year-old son. In the fall of 2007, Jende can hardly believe his luck when he lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers. But secrets and troubles soon emerge with the advent of the 2008 financial crisis. Discussion led by David Newman. Nonmembers welcome.

Others joined delegations with the Center for Jewish Nonviolence, an organization that partners with Palestinian and Israeli activists for Palestinian justice, supports Palestinian projects and helps protect Palestinians from Jewish settler violence.
