Kabbalat Shabbat Celebration: Friday, February 9 6 pm Oneg; 6:30 pm Service; 7:30 registration-only Dinner, Friday, February 9 – Havurah Shalom (Service in Zoom Room Aleph and in person at Havurah) A family-friendly oneg followed by a service led by Rabbi Benjamin and Havurah musicians, with dinner afterward. 6 pm Oneg and 6:30 Service. Learn How to Lead Shabbat Morning Services with Ken Lerner (Four-Week Class) Leading Saturday Services 7 pm to 8:30 pm, Tuesdays, February 20 to March 12 – Havurah Shalom Come to sing; learn to lead! This four-week class with Ken Lerner will teach the Shabbat morning music of the Birchot HaShachar (morning blessings) and P’sukei D’zimra (verses of praise). Hebrew reading is helpful but not essential. RSVP
Sabbatical for Deborah Eisenbach-Budner From the Havurah Presidents' Team: Our Education Director, Deborah Eisenbach-Budner will take part two of a well-deserved sabbatical beginning February 26, 2024. She returns on June 30, 2024. During this time, the wide-ranging demands of her position will be picked up by everyone, from our great staff to lay leaders, to Shabbat School Co-chairs and other congregants. If you have questions, please reach out to Deborah before ‘the last minute’. Her last day will be February 25th. Replenish well, Deborah!

Weekly Torah Study 9 am, Saturdays – Havurah Shalom and Zoom Room Bet An in-depth look at the weekly Torah reading, led by congregants. No prior knowledge or study is necessary. (On Saturday, February 17, the Weekly Torah Study will be a Multi-Synagogue Torah Study. Zoom info for this special Torah study to be announced. Learn more.) Shabbat Morning 10 am, Saturdays – Havurah Shalom and Zoom Room Aleph All are welcome at our Shabbat services, including b'nei mitzvah services (Maya Oh, February 17). (On Saturday, February 10, there will also be a Family Shabbat at 10:30 am - RSVP) Mahjong Group 1 pm, first and third Mondays – Havurah Shalom Library Mahjong is a fun, social activity that builds community, encouraging new friendships and cementing old ones. Jewish Mindfulness & Meditation 12 pm, Tuesdays – Havurah Shalom (Sanctuary or Library) and Zoom Room Bet We gather to find moments of quiet and shalom in a welcoming space. Various styles of Jewish meditation are explored. No meditation experience necessary. All are welcome to drop in. Led by Rabbi Benjamin, Adela Basayne, Nancy Becker, or Deborah Eisenbach-Budner. Ceramic Seder Plate Workshop 6:30 pm to 8 pm, Thursdays, February 1 to February 22 – Havurah Shalom We will look at traditional seder plates from cultures around the world and learn the meanings of their different elements, as well as about new traditions that have become significant in recent years. We'll then design and hand-build a seder plate using additive and subtractive techniques. While you may already have a seder plate, you are welcome to create a gift or create a seder plate that incorporates elements that are meaningful to you and your family. Led by Anna Mafchir. RSVP
Parenting Huddle - Being Divorced in Community 3:10 pm to 4:30 pm, Saturday, February 3, 2024 – Havurah Shalom Explore real-life questions that we face as parents, with some guidance from our Jewish texts and values, and each other. Discussion with Adela Basayne, Being Divorced in Community. RSVP
Racial Justice Committee Monthly Meeting 7 pm to 8:30 pm, Thursday, February 8 (every second Thursday) – Zoom Room Bet Join this monthly meeting to hear what the Racial Justice committee is up to and see how you can be involved! Rosh Ḥodesh Tov! Gender-Inclusive New Moon Ritual 7 pm to 8:15 pm, Saturday, February 10, 2024 (and recurring with each new moon) – Zoom Room Heh or in-person, leader will announce which A gender-inclusive New Moon group, learning and celebrating each Rosh Ḥodesh with ancient and contemporary ritual. Open to any and all genders, inviting each to connect with our closest heavenly body, the Moon. Gatherings take place monthly on or near the new moon of each Hebrew month a 7 pm, either on Zoom or in person - outdoors in inner North/East Portland - depending on seasonal shifts in the weather. Family Shabbat 10:30 am to 12 pm, Saturday, February 10 – Havurah Shalom and Zoom Room Aleph As part of our Shabbat School, families meet for a fabulous morning of singing, storytelling, and Torah learning. Especially for families with youth in Grades K-6. Everyone is welcome.RSVP Music Jam 7 pm to 8:30 pm, February 12 (second Mondays) – Havurah Shalom (Pardes Classroom) Havurah Music Jams Rock On! The next Music Jam is "Roll Into Light February Music Jam" on February 12. On the second Monday of the month, come sing and play in community! We will be in the Pardes classroom at Havurah. Songsheets will be provided and include a mix of country, folk, Jewish folk, liturgical and popular songs. Bring your instrument, your voice and your enthusiasm! RSVP
Steering Committee Meeting 6:30 pm, Tuesday, February 13 – Zoom Room Gimel All Havurah members are invited to attend the monthly meetings of the Havurah Steering Committee.
Multi-Synagogue Joint Torah Study 9 am to 10 am, Saturday, February 17 – Havurah Shalom and Zoom (Zoom info TBD) On February 17, the usual weekly Torah study will be supplemented by a joint, multi-synagogue Torah study led by Havurah's Emily Simon. Members of Havurah will be joined by members of Emek Shalom in Ashland. We may even have some folks joining us from other parts of the country and maybe the world. These combined torah study events have always been informative and a good way to build the Jewish community. Join us! We will take an in-depth look at the weekly parsha; no prior knowledge or study is necessary. This is a wide-open discussion of the weekly parsha. All viewpoints are welcome as we try to draw lessons from the torah. Will take place at Havurah Shalom and on Zoom. Secure Community Network's Jessica Anderson will teach us skillsets to help identify and respond to hazards, enabling you to become an Active Bystander—someone who helps and protects others with confidence and knowledge—at Havurah.RSVP

BeAware: Introduction to Situational Awareness 7 pm, Tuesday, Feb. 6 – Zoom by RSVP This course, offered by Secure Community Network, seeks to build observation skills and will teach you best practice techniques to recognize and react to various situations in your everyday life – from going to synagogue and dropping off children at school, to going to the gas station or an ATM. It will help you protect yourself, your family, and your community.RSVP

Nosh and Learn: Guardian Active Bystander Training 1 pm, Sunday, Feb. 18 – Havurah Shalom Guardians take personal responsibility for the safety and security of themselves, families, and community. Learn skillsets that help you identify, protect, and respond to all hazards, enabling you to become an Active Bystander in your community. New Parking Now Available! Legacy has generously given us permission to park in its lot at 1919 NW Lovejoy on weekdays after 5 pm and all day on weekends. We can park in any spot but 1-10. We hope this will make it easier to come for services and other programming! Please help us maintain our relationship with Legacy by honoring these guidelines.

Rose Haven Walk (register at their 2025 Reigning Roses Walk site) Sunday, May 11th 10:00a to 1:00p Rose Haven supporters and guests will unite to stride a beautiful route through NW Portland on Mother’s Day at the 12th Annual Reigning Roses Walk. Walk with, or in honor of, a special woman in your life – a mother, grandmother, daughter, partner, or friend. 10 am check-in, 11 am begin walking. (We've cancelled the Havurah Teen Engagement plan for this event; just go to the Rose Haven 2025 Reigning Roses Walk website to register!)
(IP) Jewish Ethical Responses to the Problem of Racism Monday, May 12th 6:30p to 7:45p We will address topics such as countering white nationalism and antisemitism, Jewish perspectives on reparations, repairing Jewish pioneer memory, and responding to racial microaggressions. Facilitated by Karen Sherman and Adela Basayne.

(IP) Hebrew as a Tool: Prayer and Torah (registration closed) Wednesday, May 14th 7:00p to 8:15p (This class will now be starting on January 8.) Using an in-depth, word-by-word approach, we discover literal meaning(s), ancient layers of understanding, and our own personal interpretations that stem from the nuances of the Hebrew text. Basic Hebrew decoding skills necessary.
(IP) B’nei Mitzvah Drash and Service Workshop Thursday, May 15th 7:00p to 8:00p Students and parents are guided through responding to Torah in a drash. You will also take a walk through the Shabbat Morning service. Led by Sarah Shine.
(HYB) Text and Torah Shabbat: "Forgotten" Jewish Rituals Shabbat, May 17th 10:00a to 12:00p One hour of text study with Diane Chaplin on special topics, followed by a brief service.
