Tisha B'Av
Tisha B'Av
As Jewish tradition tells it, on the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av (Tisha B’Av) our people suffered the destruction of both the First and Second Temples, as well as several other catastrophes. Jews gather each year on this day to commemorate these tragedies, chanting the book of Lamentations and singing mournful yet beautiful melodies.
On the eve of Tu B'Shvat last year, in response to the catastrophes being perpetrated upon thousands of individuals and families entering our country, Havurah joined others at the ICE headquarters in Portland for prayer, reflection, and ritual, to open our hearts to the current destruction and to turn our spirits toward insuring safety and dignity for all who enter this land.

We are currently working on two big projects - putting together care packages for families impacted by current deportation actions, and working in conjunction with two other communities of faith to support a family clinic on 10/18. Join us for a family-friendly and joyous celebration featuring music and dancing with the Torah! Simchat Torah means "Rejoicing in the Torah." On Simchat Torah, we celebrate the conclusion of our annual Torah reading cycle and the beginning of another. We read the last Torah portion, then the first chapter of Genesis, remembering that the Torah is a circle of life that never ends. Torah brings sweetness to the lives of all of us! -

We enjoyed raising, decorating, celebrating and singing in the sukkah, but now it's time to take it down, down, down to the basement until next year. Come bring your drills, your excitement for working with lumber, and your good teamwork. Sign up over on the High Holidays Volunteer Sign-Up, the final volunteer spot of the season. Thank you!
