During these seven weeks of Counting the Omer, the period linking Pesach with Shavuot, our Tuesday meditation will focus on the sefirot, or qualities, associated with each week. Why did Eastern European Jewry embrace Zionism in the late 1800s? Was it inevitable that the revival of a Jewish national community in Israel would entail confrontation with the existing Palestinian Arab community and repeated wars with its Arab neighbors? Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel was a radical, in theology and action. His work integrated intellectual rigor with love of tradition, and he called for intimate spiritual attention alongside moral public action.
