It’s not easy to talk about how you want the end of your life to be, but it’s one of the most important conversations you can have with your loved ones; it can make decision making at the end of life less painful and overwhelming.

The Hebrew Bible is rich with ambiguity. While we carry many assumptions about its points of view, the Torah is in fact multilayered and nuanced. Through close readings of particular Biblical narratives, including those of Abraham, Hagar, Jacob, and David, and with the aid of ancient and contemporary responses, we will re-read the literature that is Torah, exploring its artistry and reflecting on the ways in which it expresses and comments upon the nature of humanity.

Havurah high school and middle school youth are invited to a dinner preceding the Water Is Life presentation at 5:30 pm. This is an opportunity for Portland youth to meet with Yurok and Hoopa youth and build alliances across the state in the work for climate justice.

Join us on Thursday, Nov. 16, to hear a unique perspective on the pipeline and its implications for water and climate. Panelists will include youth from the Yurok, Hoopa, and Karuk tribes, traveling all the way from Northern California to share their perspective and a video recently produced by the Klamath tribes in southeast Oregon in opposition to the massive proposals to pipe, liquefy, and export fracked gas through the Northwest. Join us for this casual, family-friendly, and music-filled service. Beginning with candle lighting, Kiddush and challah, the service continues with prayers and music, followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner. Our Community Minyan is a welcoming and spirited service that includes davening, Torah reading and discussion. Led by Rabbi Benjamin and community members. Childcare is available.

Young children and their parents celebrate Shabbat with singing, movement, blessings, and storytelling. We touch on the main highlights of the Shabbat morning service: wonder, fun, song, listening to the world, dancing, and Torah. Tot Shabbat is fashioned for the under-6 crowd, but older kids are welcome (and can help tell a story, etc.). Afterwards, we enjoy an informal potluck oneg nosh and the chance to play and schmooze.
