Are you interested in exploring Oregon’s natural areas with other Havurahniks? Join the new Havurah Naturalists Group! The group’s first hike will be led by Jeff Gottfried in Silver Falls State Park on Tuesday Nov. 28. The group will leave Portland at 8:30 am from Jeff’s house, 7040 SW 84th Ave, and drive through Silverton to Silver Falls. We’ll hike down into the canyon of Silver Creek passing through caves behind at least two of the falls, observing rock layers from at least seven major volcanic eruptions of Columbia River basalt lava flows. There will be opportunities for bird watching and, if there is interest, tenkara (Traditional Japanese) fly fishing for wild native cutthroat trout. This group discusses both fiction and non-fiction by Jewish authors. We are interested in reading a variety of genres encompassing both historic and contemporary themes and spanning national and international settings. We meet at Havurah from 7-8:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Avid readers whose diverse interests can enhance our discussions are welcome. The Hebrew Bible is rich with ambiguity. While we carry many assumptions about its points of view, the Torah is in fact multilayered and nuanced. Through close readings of particular Biblical narratives, including those of Abraham, Hagar, Jacob, and David, and with the aid of ancient and contemporary responses, we will re-read the literature that is Torah, exploring its artistry and reflecting on the ways in which it expresses and comments upon the nature of humanity.

Join Rabbi Benjamin, Illene Safyan, and the Havurah Sanctuary team as we lead the monthly "Last Thursday Witness" Vigil on Nov. 30 at ICE offices. Through song and prayer we will lift our voices together to express our solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters. Meet at 4310 SW Macadam Ave from 10:00-11:00 am.
