Jewish Practice & Antiracism — Scholars-in-Residence this Weekend
You can still register for our time with Yehudah Webster (in person) and Rabbi David Jaffe (online), who will be with us this coming Saturday evening and all day Sunday, teaching based on their current project/curriculum, Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out. You can learn more about the project and curriculum here, and about Rabbi David and Yehudah here.
Schedule:
All sessions will take place in-person at Havurah as well in Zoom Room Alef. Child care will be provided.
Saturday, Nov. 19 Engaging with Our Ratzon — 6-8 pm — Through sharing and engaging with real-life stories, Yehudah and Rabbi David will lead us in an evening of engaging with our Ratzon — the deep desire to dismantle racism.
Sunday, Nov. 20

Lunch — 12:30-1:30 — Lunch served at Havurah. RSVP for Lunch by 3 pm Thursday.
Mussar, IOWA and the DRIO Anti-Racism Framework — 1:30-4:30 pm — An introduction to Mussar practice through the IOWA lens, and a final hour of integrating Mussar and the DRIO anti-racism framework of balance of care.

Launching a DRIO cohort at Havurah
Our plan at Havurah is to launch a DRIO va’ad (cohort) of learning and practice beginning in January. It will be facilitated by Maria Lisa Johnson and Rabbi Benjamin, who have both been training with Rabbi David and Yehudah. If you are interested in participating in that cohort, we ask that you make every effort to participate in Sunday’s session. Contact Rabbi Benjamin with questions about the practice or the va’ad.
Gatherings
This is a reminder that Havurah asks anyone with symptoms of congestion, coughing, fever, or a sore/scratchy throat to please stay home and participate remotely if possible. As we return to in-person gatherings, it is important to remember that it is not just COVID that we need to be mindful about, but other infectious diseases as well. RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is filling pediatric ICU beds (which are now in short supply here in Oregon), and influenza is expected to be on the rise as we move into winter. A negative COVID test does not mean you should attend in-person events. Participate remotely if you are experiencing any cold-like symptoms.
Zoom Room links can be found near the end of this email.

Book Group: Beyond a Two-State Solution, by Jonathan Kuttab 7 pm, Tuesday, Nov. 22 — Zoom Room Bet
Nonfiction: 110 pages. Several members of the Portland Jewish community met and were impressed by Jonathan Kuttab last year (even if they did not necessarily agree with him). Kuttab explains that the two-state solution (that he supported) is no longer viable. He suggests that any solution be predicated on the basic existential needs of the two peoples, which he discusses in exceptional detail. He formulates a one-state solution that challenges both Zionism and Palestinian nationalism. This book invites readers to begin a new conversation based on reality: two peoples will need to live together. Separation is no longer possible or (for some) desirable. Discussion led by Joel Beinin. Nonmembers welcome. RSVP for Zoom info
