Sanctuary Committee Movie Night: Eternos Indocumentados Thursday, Oct. 17, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm in the Sukkah
Havurah's Sanctuary Committee is organizing a movie night to provide us with more information about the realities at our southern border. Why are there caravans of asylum seekers at our southern border? As we all know, there are reasons why people leave their homes seeking safety and asylum. "Based on interviews with recently arrived Central Americans as well as interviews with organizers leading the struggle on the ground in Central America, this film captures the stories of Central American refugees and explores the root causes of forced migration. In the words of the late Salvadoran poet, Roque Dalton, as he says in his Poema de Amor, this film is about los Eternos Indocumentados (the Eternally Undocumented)." The movie will be followed by a group discussion.

Havurah members have partnered with the newly-formed Eastside Jewish Commons (EJC) to host one of the special Sukkot gatherings, focused on the theme of housing insecurity. We will share the Tikkun Olam work we are doing with the Portland Homeless Family Solutions, the Interfaith Alliance on Poverty, and Lift UP — focusing on ways individuals can take action. This novel by Catherine Schine is about family, loss, aging and resilience. Joy’s husband’s fall through palliative care to hospice to death takes a toll on her, their children and grandchildren. While mourning her husband and her life, Joy’s health suffers and she begins to feel "out of date, obsolete, left-behind." Discussion led by Maud Naroll.

Join Havurah's longtime partner Tivnu: Building Justice, along with PJA, and Cascadia Clusters, on Wednesdays, 10 am - 3pm, Oct. 23 through Dec. 11 at the MJCC. Let's make this a New Year of security, opportunity, and community, working alongside the folks who really need it. Tivnu and partners will bring the tools and the construction coach; you bring the hands and the heart. Sign up now!

Il Violoncello Capriccioso Sunday, Oct. 27, 5 pm at Havurah
Havurah member and cellist Diane Chaplin presents a recital for solo cello, Il Violoncello Capriccioso. The program will include music by Jewish composers as well as virtuoso works for cello. Admission is free, although donations will be accepted at the door. The event is open to the public and will be followed by a reception.

High Holiday Tzedakah Collection Was A Success!

(HYB) Torah Study for the High Holy Days Thursday, Sep 18th 7:00p to 8:30p During the High Holy Days we read four sections of the Torah. This series of study sessions will give us an opportunity to read the texts and explore their meanings. We will look at what our teachers before us thought of the readings, as well as investigate modern commentators. We also will come up with our own thoughts and see how we can understand the texts for our lives today.

Gender-Inclusive New Moon Ritual Sunday, Sep 21st 7:00p to 8:15p A gender-inclusive New Moon group, learning and celebrating each Rosh Ḥodesh with ancient and contemporary ritual. Open to any and all genders, inviting each to connect with our closest heavenly body, the Moon. An introductory meeting will happen on the full moon of Elul on Wednesday, Aug. 30 outdoors—weather permitting—in North Portland. Subsequent meetings will be on or near the new moon of each month either in person in North Portland or on Zoom, depending on seasonal shifts in the weather. Attend any or all sessions.
