Would you like to create your own tallit? Are you curious about how the tzitzit transform a simple shawl or piece of fabric into a sacred garment? Do you have a special shawl, scarf, or piece of fabric that you would like to transform into a tallit? Or are you ready to search for one? Then please join our class as we learn to a create a tallit, tie the tzitzit, and learn of the meaning of the gematria wound and knotted into the holy fringe. Basic sewing skills would be helpful. But they are not necessary if you use a finished scarf or shawl and don’t desire additional sewn elements added to the tallit such as corners and atara (the collar). Please bring your ideas and any fabric you’ve already selected for creating your own tallit to the first class so we can discuss them.

Youths being called to the Torah this year will be building community together. Topics will include what Jewish tradition has to say about things like belief, identity, and how we live our lives, as we each consider “What does being Jewish and becoming bar or bat mitzvah mean to me?” With Rabbi Benjamin.

We will be reading EcoMind, by Frances Moore’ Lappe, supplemented by sections from Paul Hawken’s Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming. We will also review chapters from Dietz and O’Neil’s Enough is Enough: Building a Sustainable Economy in a World of Finite Resources, and we will conclude with an introduction to the Green New Deal, how it can support sustainable solutions, and how we can participate in the great T’shuvah of our times.

Young children (0-5) and parents celebrate with singing, movement, blessings, and storytelling, followed by a nosh and time to play and schmooze.

This is for parents of children of any age; for parents of all backgrounds, Jewish and non-Jewish. We’ll look into the contentious historical roots of Chanukah, many of which parallel questions of cultural and religious identity that we still contend with today! We will try to articulate what we want Chanukah to really be about for our families as well as how to generally reclaim the holiday from commercialism and cooptation. We will discuss the particular challenges that our diverse families face at this time of year, as well.
