Over four sessions we will bring into the light four wise women from the Tanach who deserve recognition for their wisdom, courage and/or vitality. Classes are every other week to allow participants to have time to do the biblical reading about the woman we are studying prior to the class. Taught by Emily Simon. Led by David Kertzner. The High Holidays is both a complex and simple time for our Jewish community. At our core, we reflect on the past year, open our hearts wider, and turn with intention into the coming year -- supported and sometimes burdened with family history, community history, and our engagement with the world. Writing is one way we can move through this time and, in the process, share a part of ourselves while connecting with others in our community. This workshop is for community members to uncover their personal meaning of this year’s theme at Havurah Shalom: Nishmat Kol Ḥai - The Soul of Every Living Thing. In the first two sessions, we will write in response to prompts designed to reflect on aspects of the High Holidays. In the third session, writers will share and give feedback in smaller groups. Participants might decide to produce a mini-drash that may be selected to be read at one of the High Holiday services. This event will take place on our High Holidays platform. Registration is free. But what do they actually mean? Beyond translation, how can we connect to them personally? In this session, we will look deeply into what our “High Holidays” are really about, through the lens of some Jewish spiritual vocabulary. When the Shofar is sounded, hear, all you inhabitants of the world. Isaiah 18:13 - It is customary to hear the sound of the Shofar every day of Elul. To observe this custom, Andrine de la Rocha, Howard Patterson and Diane Chaplin will sound the Shofar every afternoon during the month of Elul, except for Shabbos. They will use the traditional Shofar calls and give a bit of kavanot each time. Each session will last only a few minutes, so be prompt or you’ll miss it!
