Covid Policy Update

Vaccination/Testing Requirement Being Considered

As the COVID Management Team (“CMT”) shared last month, the Steering Committee is considering a vaccination/testing requirement for the Havurah building that would be administered on an honor system. The Steering Committee considered this recommendation at its Nov. 9 meeting and it will be on the agenda again on Dec. 12. For more details about the recommendation, click here.

A Shmita for Hearts and Minds Support Group
Monday, Dec. 13, 5 pm – Zoom Room Bet
Join the support group on Shmita for Hearts and Minds to help counter the anxiety and discouragement that can come with our climate and social justice work. Cultivate a balance of rest, personal care, activism, and faith in community with others. We’ll have time for sharing and discussion, a guided meditation, and planning for future meetings. All are welcome to attend, whether or not you attended the first workshop held in October.

Open Meeting on Hybrid Gatherings

When Havurah eventually transitions back to gathering in person, we will remain committed to the expanded access provided by the Internet. But what will access look like? How do we hold events, classes and services in person and online at the same time? Over the summer, a group of Havurahniks met to begin this conversation and were very productive. To continue this work, we will meet and share our thoughts about modes of attendance, meaningful participation, the role technology plays in experience, and most of all, what works for us. (We won't be discussing specific technologies or immediately making any decisions.) Join us to help imagine the Havurah gatherings of tomorrow. For more information, please contact Rachel Pollak.

Earlier in November, after months of groundwork and the input of many voices, the Racial Justice Committee became Tikkun Olam's newest official committee, thanks to a unanimous vote by Steering. Through two workgroups–Social Justice Advocacy and Individual Education/Reckoning–we will provide a container within Havurah to educate ourselves and to seek opportunities to work toward racial justice. Come gather from March 23 to 27, 2022, for "B’Yachad: Reconstructing Judaism Together." We will be together both in-person and virtually to learn from and with experts, scholars and lay leaders. We will engage in conversations, ask questions and listen. We will pray together, sing together, dance together and celebrate all that we do every day in our communities to reconstruct Judaism. Congregation Neveh Shalom COVID-19 Outreach and Services (CNSCOS) provides information about the pandemic, testing, and vaccines, and helps with finding and applying for financial resources, running errands, accessing food assistance, finding other helpful services, or just calling to chat with folks who are feeling isolated or lonely. Latkes & Storytelling

Hanukah Swap Meet Shopping: Part 2

Letter from the Communications & Membership Coordinator

Dear Havurahniks,
 

After almost two and a half years of serving as your Communications & Membership Coordinator, I will be saying goodbye to the Havurah Shalom community on November 19. I'm so grateful to have been connected to a comprehensive Jewish organization whose history speaks for itself – creating something out of nothing and always striving to welcome anyone who shares its value set of bettering our world. This was the first Jewish organization I joined since I was a kid, and it has given me so much insight – it fundamentally changed what I imagined Jewish life to be. Since I joined in August 2019, I've welcomed in almost 100 new member families and we're now at almost 500 member families total – what a journey it has been.
 

For those whom I collaborated with and those who were always warm and welcoming – thank you. I will miss so many faces and spaces. Although I'm sad about leaving, I'm also excited to move on to new opportunities in Chicago. If you'd like to stay in contact, please reach out to info@havurahshalom.org and request my personal email address. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful community.

Book Group
An Egyptian Novel by Orly Castel-Bloom
Tuesday, Nov. 23, 7 pm – Room Bet
A family saga in realist style resembling a linked set of short stories. The protagonist has Egyptian roots going back many generations: on her father’s side, to the expulsion of the Jews of Spain in 1492, when seven brothers of the Kastil family (from Castille) landed on the Gaza. Two brothers of the family, Vita and Charlie Kastil (i.e. from Castille) immigrated from Egypt to Israel in the 1950s with their future wives Adele and Vivienne and settled on a kibbutz of the Marxist-Zionist Hashomer Hatzair. They were soon expelled for Stalinism and moved to Tel Aviv. Discussion led by Joel Beinin.

Hanukah Happenings

Havurah’s Hanukah celebrations will be 100% remote again this year and lots of fun with latke cooking, recipe sharing, singing, candle lighting, storytelling, and schmoozing. We will celebrate together on two nights of Hanukah: the third (Tuesday, Nov. 30) and the last (Sunday, Dec. 5) at 6:30 pm. More details coming soon. Creative Project Help Needed
A short (20-second) video about Havurah Shalom is needed. Reconstructing Judaism is asking all congregations to submit a video that best depicts our members B’Yachad – engaged in Reconstructing Judaism Together. It will be shown at the opening of the RJ Convention in March. Later the assembled videos will be used to create an interactive directory of congregations. Can you help? Recently, every adult member of your household received an invitation to complete the Havurah survey. The results of the survey will guide the congregation for the near future as we tackle a variety of issues that affect us individually and as a community. Your input is crucial. Nominating Committee Looking for Members
Havurah's Nominating Committee recruits candidates annually to serve in all Steering positions, and also helps with preparing the election slate and with onboarding of new Steering members. Rosh Chodesh: Women's Group

Rosh Chodesh, a Havurah women's group, has openings for 4 members. We meet monthly (virtually now) at Rosh Chodesh: Nov. 7 in the evening (Kislev), Dec. 5 in the evening (Tevet). The Havurah Rosh Chodesh group has been meeting for many years now. It is a group of about 14 women, which comes together each month in celebration and study in the new moon cycle. Each member takes a turn to provide commentary, insight and Jewish learning about history, traditions, holidays, and observances. We rotate the responsibility and each person takes on one month each year. Paper Bullets is the first book to tell the history of an audacious anti-Nazi campaign undertaken by an unlikely pair: two French women, Lucy Schwob and Suzanne Malherbe, who drew on their skills as Parisian avant-garde artists to write and distribute “paper bullets” — wicked insults against Hitler, calls to rebel, and subversive fictional dialogues designed to demoralize Nazi troops occupying their adopted home on the British Channel Island of Jersey. Devising their own psyops campaign, they slipped their notes into soldier’s pockets or tucked them inside newsstand magazines. Discussion led by Emily Simon.

Havurah Sacred Circle Welcomes New Participants

Havurah Sacred Circle is a group of Havurah members who work on issues around immigrant justice, racial justice, and associated issues. We are guided by INTERFAITH MOVEMENT FOR IMMIGRANT JUSTICE, IMIrJ, a local NGO that works for immigrant justice. At our recent meeting, we agreed that we would like to welcome new members to this group. We agreed to develop our understanding of the issues around immigrant rights and what are the most effective actions we can join together to make a difference. Activities and actions will be developed by the group, with efforts to involve the greater Havurah community. We are meeting monthly on Zoom on the fourth Monday from 11-12:30 pm. B'nei Mitzvah Projects: Shani Ross

Hello everyone,

For my Bat Mitzvah project I chose to focus on cleaning up Portland. SOLVE is an organization that cleans up the city, rivers, beaches and more. I personally spent time volunteering at a few clean up projects and it was a tiring but extremely rewarding experience.

If you choose to donate, please make sure to include my name in the line that says “Would you like to honor a person?” I chose specifically that donations would go to urgent care cleanups, which are clean up projects in areas where illegal dumping has occurred and specialized volunteers go to clean them up.

A weekend of storytelling services, concerts, and workshops. Havurah member, Cassandra Sagan, is thrilled to be one of the featured Tellers Saturday evening alongside Jewish Storytelling greats like Penninah Schram and Judith Black, and she will be leading a workshop Saturday afternoon and telling a new Shabbat story right before services Friday. A Shmita for Hearts and Minds: Building Our Mental Health Resilience While Doing Climate and Social Justice Work, and Our Personal Healing

Tikkun Middot, Tikkun Olam: Refining the Self for the Sake of the World

In this cohort we will engage with Jewish spiritual practice in the name of building a more just and loving world. Our primary lens will be Mussar, an approach to living centered around middot, “soul traits.” In trusted community, we will explore middot vital to justice-seeking and examine how they manifest in our relationships and actions. Five partnership groups, which Adams calls “action tables,” focus on promoting public safety, addressing homelessness, cleaning up trash across the city, and helping businesses reopen. Caste: The Origins of our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson
Tuesday, Oct. 5, 7 pm – Room Bet
This new book points to our entire social structure as an unrecognized caste system. Wilkerson points out that we tend to refer to slavery as a “sad, dark chapter” in America when in fact it lasted for hundreds of years — but in order to maintain a social order and an “economy whose bottom gear was torture”, it was necessary to give blacks the lowest possible status. Whites in turn got top status. In between came the middle castes of Asians, Latinos, indigenous people, and immigrants of African descent. Such a caste system allowed generations of whites to live under the same assumptions of inequality whether their ancestors were slave owners or abolitionists. This isn’t an easy book, but it’s extremely important, especially in light of current times. Discussion led by Laurie Brown and Marjorie Walters.

Join your neighbors for a family friendly clean-up event in collaboration with Verde, SOLVE, CBA, Hacienda CDC, Habitat for Humanity, Columbia Slough, and ABC. We will be picking up trash along Killingsworth, Cully Blvd, Hwy 30, Simpson and 65th. SOLVE provides safety and trash pick up equipment. Masks are required. Refugee Update: Assisting Afghan Arrivals to Oregon

If you missed the informational session held on September 12, you can find a recording here. The Sanctuary Committee is continuing to gather information and find out how to best assist Afghan arrivals to Oregon. In the meantime, you can access the Afghan Resource Guide which continues to be updated with information as needs change. Havurah has arranged to have a virtual training session with Catholic Charities for anyone interested in volunteering with them. The session will be held on October 11 at 7-8:30pm If you would like to register by clicking this link.

Havurah's Winter Shmita Collection Drive for Homeless
One of Havurah's first Smita events is a collection drive of clothing and housing necessities for NE homeless camps. Drop off info will be in our October Hakol.
Tikkun Olam's Poverty & Homelessness Committee member, Jenn Louis, has been supplying food, and more to those on the streets. Jenn posts regularly on Havurah's Facebook page "News from the Streets." Also, Havurah volunteers are needed on Tuesdays to hand out items, along with Jenn. For more info contact Jenn Louis. Info list here.

Sanctuary Update: Resources for Supporting Afghan Refugees
The Tikkun Olam Cluster and Sanctuary Committee met on Sunday to discuss how we as individuals and as a community can help new Afghan arrivals to Oregon and advocate for protection and security for vulnerable populations still in Afghanistan. There is a Resource Guide to learn more on how you can help.

Youth Education COVID Guidelines

Education Director Deborah Eisenbach-Budner has been in communication with Shabbat School families about safety protocols that will be in place when our Youth Education programs start this fall. The Core Crisis Team has reviewed those protocols and incorporated them into the Havurah Safety Gathering Guidelines. Though there are slight variations between Shabbat School, Middle School, and High School, the basic rules will require masks and distancing for all (adults and youth), limiting total attendance for most activities, requiring any eating to be outdoors, and tracking attendance. The updated Guidelines can be viewed in full here. The Youth Education rules can be found in Section 6 starting on the bottom of page 5 in the Guidelines.
