Shabbat School Begins: Celebrate 40 Years!
Shabbat School begins this weekend! Let’s hear and see your reflections. On December 7 at 4:00 pm, we will look back and marvel on 40 years of our unique and amazing family cooperative Jewish education model, while envisioning our future. Will you share some reflections, recollections, photos, memories of the Shabbat School experience for you, your children, your family? Contemplative Shabbat
Saturday, Oct. 5, 10 am - 12 pm
Covering less of the liturgy than normal, we will take our time chanting particular verses and leave plenty of room for silent prayer and meditation as an opportunity to remain immersed in the sacred work of this season of returning. We will engage in some reflective Torah discussion and share blessings through chanting a few aliyot from the portion. Rabbi Benjamin will be leading.

Sanctuary Committee Movie Night: Eternos Indocumentados

Havurah's Sanctuary Committee is organizing a movie night to provide us with more information about the realities at our southern border. Why are there caravans of asylum seekers at our southern border? As we all know, there are reasons why people leave their homes seeking safety and asylum. "Based on interviews with recently arrived Central Americans as well as interviews with organizers leading the struggle on the ground in Central America, this film captures the stories of Central American refugees and explores the root causes of forced migration. In the words of the late Salvadoran poet, Roque Dalton, as he says in his Poema de Amor, this film is about los Eternos Indocumentados (the Eternally Undocumented)." The movie will be followed by a panel discussion.

Il Violoncello Capriccioso

Havurah member and cellist Diane Chaplin presents a recital for solo cello, Il Violoncello Capriccioso. The program will include music by Jewish composers as well as virtuoso works for cello. Admission is free, although donations will be accepted at the door. The event is open to the public and will be followed by a reception.

We will gather in Lower Macleay Park in the early morning, beginning with some chanting then walking mindfully along the trail. In the midst of this month of Elul, we will access teachings and intentions from the tradition to direct us toward teshuvah, the returning and renewal of this season. Feel free to look around the website and get a feel for the new setup! There will be a lot more coming in the next few weeks, particularly to the "Clusters" tab. As committees and groups submit more info about themselves, you will be seeing more. Right now, there are only a couple committees listed. Don't worry, more will be added soon, along with descriptions and mission statements for those committees that have them.

To submit to our Havurah Happenings community email (this one) or the calendar, you can now find the "Submit" tab on our website all the way to the right next to the "Donate" tab. Apologies, as it has now moved twice, but hopefully this is its resting location.
 

You will also see that "Religious Life" has been renamed to "Services" to save space and keep people from confusing Avodah with basic info on our Shabbat and weekday services.

Machzor Update: Our Semi-Finalists Demystified
Thursday, Sept. 19, 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm at Havurah
We're shopping for a new machzor! Come a half hour early to the Hashiveinu: Musical and Spiritual Preparation for the Days of Returning class to learn about the pros and cons of each of the machzorim choices. Machzor Task Force members, Cindy Merrill, Susan Brenner and Sacha Reich will present the criteria we used for selecting our top three book candidates along with the strengths and weaknesses of each one. Later in the year you can fill out a survey in which you state your preferences for your favorite one.

Global Climate Strike!
Friday, Sept. 20, 10 am, Terry Schrunk Plaza, 431 SW Madison
Support young climate activists by joining the Global Climate Strike. March and attend other events and activities. This will be a huge international event as students and their supporters strike from school and work to protest lack of action on the climate emergency by governments, corporations, and others. The March begins at 10:30am, but join Havurah members and other faith-based organizations at 10:00 am. Look for the Havurah sign at Terry Schrunk Plaza across from City Hall.

Book Club Discussion Group: Three Floors Up by Eshkol Nevo

An Israeli bestseller, this book is set in a Tel Aviv apartment building. A resident on each floor tells a story in 1st person narrative. Arnon is a tormented, retired military officer who fought the First Intifada. Conditioned to kill or be killed, he continues to make things worse for himself as he obsesses about his daughter’s safety. Hani, whose husband’s lucrative job keeps him traveling while she cares for their two children at home, brings emotional excitement into her life by risking hiding her brother-in-law from the police. Devora, a retired former judge, joins a social movement, tries to reconnect with her estranged son, and falls in love with a man who isn't what he seems. Discussion led by Sandy Bacharach.

Go behind the scenes to see how Lift UP provides food security for low-income residents in our community. Begin at the warehouse with wine and appetizers. Learn about the Delivered Food Box program and see an Emergency Food Closet. Take the Lift UP shuttle (or drive) to First Immanuel Lutheran Church (1816 NW Irving St.) to tour Preston's Pantry, and enjoy a Supper Club meal with the Lift UP team. Shuttle riders will be returned to the warehouse parking lot.

Contemplative Shabbat and Torah Study
Saturday, August 31, 10 am - 12 pm
Even though many Havurahniks are heading to Ashland for the “Indecent” Shabbaton at the end of August, there will still be a Shabbat morning service at Havurah Shalom on Saturday, August 31. The service will include contemplative chant, meditation, and Torah study, and will be led by Tivona Reith. This intimate gathering will be an opportunity for inner reflection and preparation for the High Holy Days, as well as welcoming Rosh Chodesh Elul. Mourners Kaddish, Kiddush, and Motzi will be included.

Add Your Voice to the High Holidays!
Havurahniks, we invite you to add your voice to our prayer and celebration at High Holidays this year by submitting a “mini-drash” or kavanah to be included in our services. These short reflections or sharing of life experience, 2-3 minutes long, can be either in response to this year’s theme “Hineinu” or connected to the annual themes of teshuvah (returning / renewal / repentance) or forgiveness. The writing can be your own, or it can be a reading that expresses something true for you.

For several years now, Legacy Health Systems' corporate office at 1919 NW Lovejoy has generously offered free parking spaces to Havurah members and guests on weekends. Please note that parking at the Legacy Health Systems corporate office is available only on Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays, when Legacy employees aren't using the lot. So for the second day of Rosh Hashanah, which is on a weekday, Havurah members and guests need to park elsewhere or take public transportation to the services. (For the second year in a row, second day services will be held at Havurah instead of the Tiffany Center.) 
 

(3) Welcome to Brad Pector, Communications & Membership Coordinator – Welcome to Havurah's new Communications & Membership Coordinator, Brad Pector, who joined Havurah's staff on Monday. Brad recently moved to Portland from Iowa City, Iowa, and is originally from the greater Chicago area. During his time in Iowa City, he earned a BA in Art and a Certificate in Writing from the University of Iowa, in addition to spending a lot of his time in local activist groups. Brad is passionate about community organizing and seeks to fuse the powerful moral and ethical teachings of Judaism and Jewish history with a renewed spirit in the realm of ongoing social justice movements. (5) Invitation to Add Your Voice to High Holidays – Havurahniks, we invite you to add your voice to our prayer and celebration at High Holidays this year by submitting a “mini-drash” or kavanah to be included in our services. These short reflections or sharing of life experience, two to three minutes long, can be either in response to this year’s theme “Hineinu” or connected to the annual themes of teshuvah (returning/renewal/repentance) or forgiveness. The writing can be your own, or it can be a reading that expresses something true for you. Depending on participation, we may not be able to include all of them in High Holiday services, but we hope to share each of them in one form or another. Our PHFS Havurah volunteer list currently has over 70 families. Homelessness is something we all see daily in our city. An hour orientation is the first step to get involved. Orientations are at PHFS' new Lent location (address given when you RSVP). PHFS is just a few months away from opening its doors to approximately 26 homeless families; currently eight families are being housed there. These families have to move between two buildings for day and night shelter as in the past. (8) Book Discussion Group: The Way to Spring, Tuesday, Aug. 27, 7:00-8:30 pm – The Way to the Spring: Life and Death in Palestine: Ben Ehrenreich, a novelist and writer for publications such as the New York Times Magazine and Harpers, lived in a particular West Bank village and documented its struggle against the Occupation. For this remarkable work of journalism, he received the National Magazine Award. The book has been praised as “a heartbreaking account of the brutal and often surreal realities of life under the Israeli occupation. After reading it, you don’t know whether to despair at the callousness and self-righteousness of human beings, or to wonder at their resilience and creativity.” (Yuval Noah Harari, The Guardian, Best Books of 2016) Discussion led by David Newman.

(9) Two Spots Open in Adult B'nei Mitzvah Fall Trope Class, Wednesdays, Sept. 4, 11, 18, 25 and Oct. 2, 7:00-8:15 pm – If you are able to read Hebrew, if you can attend all classes and agree to complete homework in between classes, this may be your opportunity to learn the fundamentals of leyning (chanting) Torah. (1) Upcoming Shabbat: Community Minyan, Saturday, Aug. 3, 10:00 am – This Saturday Rabbi Benjamin, Maria Lisa Johnson, Frances Springgate, Tivona Reith, and other Havurahniks will lead, leyn, and discuss Parshot Matot and Masei, in which we learn the commands regarding vows, laws about murder, and where each of the 12 tribes will live.

(2) Name Tags Coming to Havurah – Soon we will all know each other by name with wooden name tags coming to members over the age of 13. Names will be used from Havurah's membership directory. Since Havurah young adults over 18 may not live at home or attend Havurah, we are planning to just print name tags for those who are at Havurah frequently or even occasionally. Note that we will NOT use the name tags outside the building, for High Holidays at the Tiffany Center, for example. (3) Children's Book Collection – Tikkun Olam Adelante is collecting English language children’s books to give to immigrant children at an upcoming community event in the Ortiz Center neighborhood. (4) Hebrew Teacher for Youth & Amateur (or Pro) Filmmaker Needed – Havurah Shalom seeks a part-time teacher for youth ages 8-10, who can teach beginning Hebrew reading with a very clear Tora Aura curriculum. Hours of instruction are 16 Saturdays (already scheduled) between Sept. 21 and May 9, 1:30-2:40 pm, at Havurah. 7-14 children per class. Competitive compensation. (6) Ways to Help Through Interfaith Alliance on Poverty – Havurah is still a fairly new partner of the Interfaith Alliance on Poverty. Here are some “hands on” opportunities for us: 1) Renovation of the Oak Leaf Mobile Home Park. The residents will be moving back gradually over the coming weeks, and they can use help unpacking, sorting through stored items, etc. If able to assist, please contact Nicole Jones, Resident Services, St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County, 541-214-0546, nicole.jones@svdp.us. 2) The Walnut Park Shelter (at MLK and Killingsworth) continues to be open. (10) Play Reading of "God of Vengeance" In Preparation for "Indecent" Shabbaton, Wednesdays, Aug. 7 and Aug. 14, 7:00 pm, Havurah Shalom – To support the joint Shabbaton over Labor Day weekend with Temple Emek Shalom, Emily Simon will lead an informal, participatory play reading of "God of Vengeance," the play on which "Indecent" is based. Act I will be read on Aug. 7, and Act II will be read on Aug. 14. The evenings will begin with a short show introduction by Emily, who will then assign the parts based upon who shows up and what part they want to read. Hopefully there will be enough time after the reading to then discuss the play. Everyone is welcome to participate in either evening event (no need to attend both), whether they are attending the Shabbaton, seeing "Indecent" at another time, have already seen it, or are not seeing it at all. A number of Havurah members have been trained over the last several years to volunteer to support refugee families. (2) Healing and Transformation For the Days of Awe, Sundays, Aug. 11-Sept. 22 and Oct. 6, 7:00-9:00 pm, 2929 SW Multnomah Blvd, First Floor Conference Room – In “This Is For Real And You Are Totally Unprepared," the late Rabbi Alan Lew weaves a mystical approach to Torah in the weeks between Tisha B’Av and Sukkot. Rabbi Lew teaches that the seeds of the New Year, and our renewal, begin with the acknowledgement of our great losses, commemorated on Tisha B’Av. The ten weeks between this tragic date and Sukkot allow a deep introspective opportunity to run through our High Holidays. Through meditation, study, short free writes, and sharing, this weekly class invites participants to know these weeks and themselves through Torah and our Kabbalistic Tree of Life. (5) Interfaith Alliance on Poverty "Coming Home Party," Saturday, July 20, 11:00 am-2:00 pm, Oak Leaf Mobile Home Park, 4556 NE Killingsworth (Parking at St. Charles Church, 5310 NE 42nd Ave) – As partners of the Interfaith Alliance on Poverty, Havurah Shalom is invited to visit and view the Oak Leaf Mobile Home Park, which reports describe as being 'like new.' There will be barbeque and music. Over the last nine months, Oak Leaf residents have been living temporarily off-site while St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County (nonprofit park owners) made improvements to the park, including new mobile homes, a community center and food pantry, and kids' play area. These changes were possible because residents and neighbors came together to protect the park from closure in 2016. Let’s come together again and welcome home Oak Leaf neighbors with food, storytelling, entertainment, and kids activities. If you are able, bring canned food to kick-start the food pantry! Questions? (7) Walk with Immigrants and Refugees, Sunday, July 21, 11:00 am, East Portland Community Office, 1017 NE 117th Ave, Portland – We are invited to meet at the East Portland Community Office for a one-mile walk to Knott Park, to WALK with Refugees and Immigrants as a show of support. This event recognizes the unique experiences of new Portlanders, of all ages and backgrounds. There will be music, food, and other activities for families, and the opportunity to hear refugee and immigrant stories. This Parks for New Portlanders program event is in partnership with Sunday Parkways, nonprofits, refugee and immigrant organizations, and local elected leaders. We are invited to participate on this walk to inspire a more compassionate, generous, and welcoming Portland.

(8) Book Discussion of The Tortilla Curtain, Tuesday, July 23, 7:00-8:30 pm – Originally published in 1994, The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle is very topical now. Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher lead an ordered sushi and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: he is a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegal immigrants Candido and America Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine. And from the moment a freak accident brings Candido and Delaney into intimate contact, these four and their opposing worlds gradually intersect in what becomes a tragicomedy of error and misunderstanding. The book is about middle class values, illegal immigration, xenophobia, poverty and environmental destruction. In 1997 it was awarded the French Prix Medicis Etranger prize for best foreign novel. (9) Amazing Jewish Conference in Portland, Sunday-Wednesday, July 28-31, Reed College – NewCAJE’s mission is to connect, inspire and affirm all Jewish educators to build a stronger Jewish community, but many of the workshops and performances at the Portland conference this month will be great for anybody who is interested in Jewish life. (10) Play Reading of "God of Vengeance" In Preparation for "Indecent" Shabbaton, Wednesdays, Aug. 7 and Aug. 14, 7:00 pm, Havurah Shalom – To support the joint Shabbaton over Labor Day weekend with Temple Emek Shalom, Emily Simon will lead an informal, participatory play reading of "God of Vengeance," the play on which "Indecent" is based. Act I will be read on Aug. 7, and Act II will be read on Aug. 14. The evenings will begin with a short show introduction by Emily, who will then assign the parts based upon who shows up and what part they want to read. Hopefully there will be enough time after the reading to then discuss the play. Everyone is welcome to participate in either evening event (no need to attend both), whether they are attending the Shabbaton, seeing "Indecent" at another time, have already seen it, or are not seeing it at all. (11) Training with Catholic Charities to Support Refugees, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 6:30-8:30 pm, 2740 SE Powell Blvd, Portland – As part of Havurah's Tikkun Olam work to support refugees arriving in Portland, we partner with Catholic Charities. A number of Havurah members have been trained over the last several years to volunteer to support refugee families. Catholic Charities is hosting another refugee volunteer training on Aug. 13, and we hope some Havurah members will be trained. For more information and how to register, click here.

(1) Upcoming Shabbat: Bat Mitzvah of Maddie Teitelman, Saturday, July 6, 10:00 am-12:00 pm – This Saturday Maddie Teitelman, daughter of Andrew Teitelman and Chandra Basham, will be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah. (3) Reconstructing Judaism Is a Founding Member of the New Progressive Israel Network – Reconstructing Judaism is one of ten leading organizations representing Americans who are committed to pursuing democracy, equality, and peace in Israel, and who announced the launch of the Progressive Israel Network. The new coalition will provide a strong, unified voice in support of its members’ common goals: democracy and equal rights, religious freedom and pluralism, and a two-state solution that would secure a peaceful future for Israel and end the 52-year-long occupation. (4) Hebrew Teacher for Youth Needed – Havurah Shalom seeks a part-time teacher for youth ages 8-10, who can teach beginning Hebrew reading with a very clear Tora Aura curriculum. Hours of instruction are 16 Saturdays (already scheduled) between Sept. 21 and May 9, 1:30-2:40 pm, at Havurah. 7-14 children per class. Competitive compensation. (5) Book Discussion Group: The Tortilla Curtain, Tuesday, July 23, 7:00-8:30 pm – Originally published in 1994, The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle is very topical now. Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher lead an ordered sushi and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: he is a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegal immigrants Candido and America Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine. And from the moment a freak accident brings Candido and Delaney into intimate contact, these four and their opposing worlds gradually intersect in what becomes a tragicomedy of error and misunderstanding. The book is about middle class values, illegal immigration, xenophobia, poverty and environmental destruction. In 1997 it was awarded the French Prix Medicis Etranger prize for best foreign novel. (8) Shabbat in the Pool, Saturday, Aug. 10, 5:15-7:30 pm – We've got the Sellwood Pool to ourselves for Shabbat games followed by a potluck picnic and Havdalah. Music? Yes! Fun for everyone? You bet! RSVP here to save your spot and help us know how many lifeguards to request.

(9) Middle School for 2019-20 – We are planning for Havurah Middle School and hope you will join us. Havurah Middle School is for those who will be in Grades 7 and 8 in the autumn. The goals of Havurah Middle School are Kehillah and Kesher: Community and Connection. The Havurah Middle School program aims to be fun and help students expand their circle of relationships and community. It is structured to accommodate the fact that many families are involved with Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation or other transitions. The classes and activities tend toward a Jewish cultural focus, rather than religious, and expose the students to diverse ways of being Jewish. There is always a good dose of Jewish cooking and food!

We will meet on the following Wednesdays: Sept. 25; Oct. 16, 23, 30; Nov. 6, 13, 20; Dec. 4, 11; Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26; March 4, 11, 18. Watch for a special email coming soon with more information about Middle School and a link to a registration form.

(10) Havurah High for 2019-20 – We are planning High School for next year and look forward to welcoming new and returning students in the fall. The coming year promises to be an exciting and engaging one with opportunities for students to learn from each other and our High School Educator, David Feder. In Havurah High, teens in grades 9-12 explore, challenge, and reflect on questions that arise from their multi-faceted identities as teens, Jews, Americans, and modern people with particular experiences and perspectives. The curricular focus comes from expressed student interest as well as the educator’s expertise.

Havurah High School classes meet on the following Wednesday nights: Sept. 25; Oct. 16, 23, 30; Nov. 6, 13, 20; Dec. 4, 11; Jan. 8, 15, 29; Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26; March 4, 11, 18; April 1,15, 22. (12) Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Donate $9,000 to Hand in Hand – The following was posted yesterday by JTA: "The Times of Israel announced today that US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she is donating $9,000 to a network of bilingual Hebrew and Arabic schools in Israel. "The grant to schools operated by Hand in Hand comes from prize money that Bader Ginsburg, who is Jewish, was awarded in winning the 2019 Gilel Storch Award from a Stockholm-based organization called Jewish Culture in Sweden, Haaretz reported." Havurah Job Opening: Communications and Membership Coordinator – Havurah Shalom seeks a dynamic and culturally competent individual to be responsible for communications with our members and the greater Portland community. Collaboratively with our small staff and highly participatory community, you will produce weekly, bi-weekly and monthly print and e-mail newsletters, support the website and database, welcome new members, connect members to activities of interest, and support volunteers. (5) Free NW Film Center Tickets Available – As a sponsor of the Portland Jewish Film Festival, Havurah has 10 tickets to give away to members! (6) Portland Homeless Family Solutions (PHFS) – The building in the Lents neighborhood purchased by PHFS is just a few months away from opening its doors to approximately 26 homeless families. These families will not have to move between two buildings for day and night shelter as in the past. Join our very dedicated, active group of Havurah volunteers at the Lents shelter by attending a PHFS orientation. Next one will be held at the Lents building on June 19 from 5:00-6:00 pm. (7) MACG Delegate Assembly & Annual Meeting, Thursday, June 20, 7:00-9:00 pm, Saint Andrews Church, 5310 NE 42nd, Portland – Havurah is a member organization of MACG, Metropolitan Alliance for the Common Good. MACG is an alliance of faith, labor, health education and community organizations dedicated to building a base of leaders to effectively stand for change they want to see in their communities. MACG works with member organizations to develop campaigns and take action on issues of concern in the tri-county area. (8) Book Group Discusses Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa, Tuesday, June 25, 7:00-8:30 pm – The renowned Palestinian writer Susan Abulhawa describes the creation of Israel and what it meant for those who lived there before. Written as a fictional memoir, it follows a family forcibly removed from their olive-farming village by the new Israeli state, then displaced to canvas tents in the Jenin refugee camp. Cinderblock huts replace their tents. But amidst their loss and fear, hatred and pain, there is always the waiting to return to a lost home. The novel's story is told through the voice of the village patriarch’s granddaughter, a bright, sensitive girl. She makes it out of the camps, yet returns years later, to marry and bear a child. One of her brothers is kidnapped to be raised Jewish, and one will end with bombs strapped to his middle. Discussion led by David Newman.

(10) Take Your Copy of Havurah's Old Siddurim – Before switching to our current Kol Haneshama prayer books, Havurahniks put together their own booklet with prayers for Shabbat, including Mincha, Ma'ariv and Havdallah. These are in excellent condition and still quite functional. We are looking to save a few copies for posterity but also to find people who can use them, so they are not sitting in storage anymore. If you would like copies for yourself, your family, or your community, please email Rachel Pollak at rachel@havurahshalom.org to arrange a pick-up time.

(11) Protecting Members' Contact Information – Due to recent phishing using Havurah members' emails, Havurah will no longer include members' email addresses or phone numbers on our website. This includes our weekly community emails, which are posted to our blog and linked to our website, and our website calendar posts. People will be directed to the online membership directory for members' contact information. Any member who is logged in to our website can find the membership directory at the bottom of the drop-down menu under "Community."

Please be aware that any official communication from Havurah Shalom will come from a havurahshalom.org address, so if you receive an email claiming to be from staff which does not come from havurahshalom.org, don’t answer it. Mark it as spam. If you have any questions about whether an email comes from a staff member, please ask by phone or email to info@havurahshalom.org.

Logging in For the First Time

To log in to our website for the first time, click on "login" in the upper right corner of our home page, enter your email address as your ID, and create a password at least eight characters long. After you receive an email confirming that your password has been received, you can log in any time. This both gives you access to the membership directory and allows you to update your personal membership account with current information. Office staff can help if you have questions.

(1) International Refugee Day Movie: Root Causes of Migration, Thursday, June 20, 6:30-9:00 pm, SEIU 503, 6401 SE Foster Road, Portland – June 20 is International Refugee Day. A film screening of "Eternos Indocumentados: Central American Refugees in the United States" will be followed by a panel discussion about the migrant-refugee exodus and the history of forced migration from Central America to the U.S. Local community members will share their experiences in working to address the conditions and issues of migration. "Based on interviews with recently arrived Central Americans and organizers leading the struggle on the ground in Central America and the U.S., this film captures the stories of refugees and uncovers the root causes of forced migration as well as migrant incarceration. In the words of revolutionary, Salvadoran poet Roque Dalton, this film captures the lives of los Eternos Indocumentados (the Eternally Undocumented)." See the movie flier here.
