From Rabbi Benjamin to Our Community
Author | |

Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018
Dear Havurah Community,
It is hard to know where to begin to respond to the tragedy that struck the Tree of Life Or L’Simcha Congregation yesterday. This hateful and violent act of anti-Semitism was unleashed upon our fellow Jews as they gathered to join in prayer and to celebrate life. Our hearts are with the families of those murdered, and with the entire community as they endure these losses and this terrifying trauma. We pray for the healing of those injured in body and in spirit, and for the entire Pittsburgh Jewish community — may they know peace and security once again.
Throughout the day yesterday, I received messages of support and comfort from colleagues. Christian and Muslim leaders sending love and prayers, assuring me that they are here with us and for us. It brought me back to several years ago in Corvallis when our local mosque was attacked and nearly burned down. Faith leaders and communities showed up at the mosque and told our Muslim neighbors that they were not alone. We sincerely meant it, and I know that those expressions of kinship meant a great deal to them. As I responded to the messages last night, I felt that same sense of kinship, and the same trust in the power of that kinship to guide us through this dark moment. When forces come to destroy and terrorize, we can and we must continue to find one another. And as we do, we understand more deeply that we are in this together. The sorrow, fear, and anger that we in the Jewish community feel, while unique to our particular journey, are also the same sorrow, fear, and anger felt by all communities who are targeted. As we stand together as Jews, we stand with all those who yearn for safety and freedom. In this time, more than ever, we must dedicate ourselves to continuing the work in which Havurah is invested — that of loving our neighbor and building bridges wherever possible, that of opposing injustice and pursuing our vision of a less violent and more compassionate world. In this way, we enhance the safety of our own community along with that of all people who are vulnerable.
We also, in this time, need to draw comfort from one another. There will be a vigil at Congregation Beth Israel today at 4:00 pm, led by the Oregon Board of Rabbis and the Jewish Federation, along with other community leaders. In addition, Shir Tikvah is hosting a vigil at 5:00 pm.
And within the Havurah community, we need to be here for each other right now. Let us make room for our hearts to break together, and let us draw strength from each other amidst feelings of fear and insecurity. If I can be of support to anyone as you navigate the difficult emotional and spiritual terrain following this tragedy, please reach out to me. And please reach out to one another.
May the memories of each individual slain yesterday be a blessing in the lives of their loved ones and communities. Through love and courage, may we dissolve hatred. And may all who dwell on earth be safe.
Rabbi Benjamin

Statement Opposing Trump Plan to Curtail Rights of Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People, Posted by Reconstructing Judaism on Oct. 22, 2018:
Reconstructing Judaism and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association lift our collective voices in support of transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people — our loved ones, our community leaders, and people across the globe.
We honor the holiness of transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming individuals’ lives, and uphold the value of b’tselem elohim, that each person is created in the image of divinity. We celebrate the individuals and cultural practices that advance our collective work for gender justice. We affirm the centrality of diverse gender expression and identity, gender fluidity, and gender activism in our Reconstructionist communities.
We unequivocally oppose any attempt by the Trump Administration to dismantle federal protections for trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people under Title IX.
We stand as partners against attacks on our communities and our loved ones, in the United States, in North America, and beyond. We vehemently reject that the binary sex marker assigned at an individual’s birth should dictate their access to facilities and services in health care, educational, and governmental settings, and we will protest policies that seek to uphold this scientifically and medically unsound thinking.
In keeping with the Reconstructionist movement’s resolution affirming full inclusion of transgender and non-binary Jews we reaffirm our commitments to enact gender affirmative practices in our Jewish congregations and communities: by educating about gender beyond the binary at our upcoming Convention, collaborating with Jewish Social Justice Roundtable partner organizations and others in support of trans-affirmative advocacy, and engaging in assessment and advancement of our own organizational practices.
Our ethical commitment to upholding gender-expansiveness is central to the flourishing of the Reconstructionist movement, now and going forward. In solidarity with transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming community members, we proudly proclaim: your existence is a blessing.
You can read the statement on the website for Reconstructing Judaism.

Havurah Ballot Measure Endorsements
Author | |
Date Added |
One way we live Havurah’s mission to promote acts of social responsibility is through political action. Havurah’s Steering Committee has voted to take positions on the four ballot measures listed below based on the close alignment of these critical ballot measures with work happening in our Tikkun Olam work groups:
- No on Measure 105 (Sanctuary)
- Yes on Measures 102 (Housing), Metro 26-199 (Housing), and Portland 26-201 (Clean Energy)
Other measures on the ballot also need our attention. Please read your voter pamphlet and make sure to vote! Click here for more information.
While over the years we have taken positions on ballot measures, we are aware that there is not always consensus within our community. We will be clarifying our process for taking political positions over the next 18 months. If you are interested in helping to develop that process, please contact Chris Coughlin, Tikkun Olam Lead.
An Opportunity to Make a Difference: Phone Banking at Havurah, Tuesday, Oct. 23, 6:00-8:30 pm
Join us for a wonderful member-to-member opportunity: calling fellow Havurah members to "get out the vote" and discuss the four ballot measures that Havurah’s Steering Committee has taken positions on and which align with our Tikkun Olam work:
- Yes on 26-199 – Metro Regional Affordable Housing Bond Measure
- Yes on 26-201 – Portland Clean Energy Initiative
- Yes on Measure 102 – Statewide Affordable Housing Measure
- NO on Measure 105 – End Oregon’s Sanctuary Law
This is an important and fun opportunity for interested Havurah members to join together on one evening to reach out to other Havurah Members and encourage them to vote in this mid-term election. We will provide clear and brief information about each measure for callers to discuss with folks they call. We will not try to persuade anyone but to let them know that Havurah encourages folks to consider the positions mentioned above.
We will provide pizza & snacks. Remember to bring your cell phone (and charger just in case).
Please RSVP by Monday to either Michael Heumann at heumanncycle@gmail.com or Shari Raider at shari.raider@gmail.com.
